How to escape from resume filter when applying for job?
Q. I idiotically lost a job interview a couple of months ago. I applied again but they rejected it saying they have their resume on file and that I can't apply for the job again till one year from the date of the last interview. They have software which automatically compares a resume submitted with the resumes in their database. Has anyone been cunning enough to modify resume in ways that the resume filter software can't identify as duplicate? I desperately need to apply for that job.

A. As a professional recruiter, I have a couple of questions that need to be clarified. 1 Are you applying for the exact same position as before? 2 Are you applying for a different position than the first one? 3 What was the reason they gave you for turning you down the first time? If you are applying for the same job again, I would say you have a problem, but if its a different position with the same company; most companies will accept the resume and consider it just like they would for anyone who has never applied there before. Most companies and large corporations will consider you if you go to the HR Manager and explain that you are applying for a different position this time. If the reason they did not accept you the first time was… [cont.]

What's the difference between a faxed resume and an emailed resume?
Q. I have to send out a resume to jobs I am applying to, but a lot of employers want resumes to be faxed rather than email. I don't have a fax machine, which is why it is easier for me to just send it by email. It is inconvenient to go somewhere and pay to get my resume faxed. I can't afford a fax machine right now, so this makes things worse. What is the difference between a resume sent by fax and one sent by email?
Asked by swizzy74 - Fri Dec 11 16:18:08 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you fax it, then they don't have to print it. They can simply have someone pick up the faxes and distribute them. If you want the job, you'll fax copies in. Plus, employers don't want hundreds of emails clogging up their inbox.

A. My biggest advice is to NOT use those companies. They charge you a few hundred dollars, and honestly, they create the worst, hardest to read resumes, which will probably hinder your job search. I appreciate you are busy, but you will get that much more value out of just writing the resume yourself. In all honesty, the content of the resume is more important than the format. Regardless of how much you earn, you can still use a standard word template (in fact I would actually strongly suggest you do), with as little ruffles and lace as possible! Clean lines and not clutter. As content is most important, do you really think it makes any sense that you trust someone who has not done your job to write up your resume? Also, I see too… [cont.]

I come in contact with many qualified people who do not portray themselves well on the resume. Due to the recession I know money is tight for most people but I don't want to give my service for free. What price would you pay or do you think is fair to charge for resumes based on the current economic condition?

A. find a template. if you have Microsoft Works or Microsoft Office installed on your computer, sometimes they have premade templates and all you would have to do is fill in your information. If you don't have that, then go to google and seach "how to make a resume" or something similar.

A. Hi. The one thing you have working for you is your age. All employers will recognize that you won't have previous work experience and will not count that against you. In fact, there are not many 15 year-olds that take the time to even write a resume so you are already at an advantage. I wrote an article about this that you may find helpful: You want to write a functional resume -- that means that you write out who you are as a person, including your skills and talents on the top of the page, then write out some of the things you've done (your volunteer work is perfect for this). In your resume, focus on the volunteering you've done, what you did in volunteering, and how you made a positive impact at the place you volunteered at. It' [cont.]

A. There are many things you could put under education, regardless of whether they graduated or not. Consider the following: - Volunteering. Did they volunteer in the school library, cafeteria or computer lab? Were they a member of the grad committee? Did they get involved with student government? Work on the yearbook? - Work Experience Placements. Did they complete any internships or work experience placements? - Sports/Academic Accomplishments. Were they on the basketball team or on the chess club? How many years? Point out that this demonstrates teamwork skills, a strong work ethic and the ability to balance priorities. How should I write on my resume that I took a few cooking classes and have kitchen safety knowledge?
Q. This is my resume for a resturant busboy or prep-chef. With the consideration that the main headers of my resume are: Objective Skills Work Experience Education Hobbies How should I put that I took some cooking classes in high school (home ec/foods). I was mainly thinking of putting those classes under skills with a small explination, or in education. How should I say it to be most appealing for a potential employer?
Asked by Paulk - Wed May 28 00:26:49 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just as a layperson, I would think that perhaps putting the names of the classes that you'd taken in high school as well as learning about kitchen safety and preventing food borne illness under the "education" section would be a good idea since you did take the courses while in high school. For the objective, it may be more on the simple side such as "Seeking a position as a restaurant busboy or preparatory-chef." Please don't take this the wrong way, but please do remember to use spell check (restaurant, explanation :) One doesn't necessarily need to list hobbies on a resume. It may ask on the job application though. And it's best to type at the bottom of the resume that 'References Available Upon Request' as opposed to providing… [cont.]

A. Rather than a job objective, put a job title at the top of your resume. Research the school districts and find out what your job title would be. It may be Special Education Assistant, or Special Needs Teacher, or something similar. Then, right below it, provide a short summary explaining why you are qualified for that position. This is preferable than an objective, which merely describes what you want, rather than what you offer. See below for an example.
