How Important are Labels when Mailing Resumes?
Q. I'll be mailing out my headshot and resumes to various talent agencies this week and was wondering: How important are labels? Would it be "unprofessional" to just handwrite the address? Were can I get address labels made if so? Kinkos maybe? And no I can't use email because they require hard copies.

A. If you have very neat handwriting, then it will be okay to hand address them, but it's still more professional to label. At most office supply stores (Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, etc.) they have a very cheap label writer called DymoLabel. It's about $60-$80 and includes software CD to go right on your computer. From there, you just type in the names and addresses, then print them. Edit: If you already have Microsoft Word on your computer, then you can also just buy the sheets of peel and stick labels at the office supply store. Most stores have their own brands which are cheaper in price, but if not, then go with Avery. Once you have the label sheets, just merge your address list with a label format and print them.

A. Personally, I would wear something professional but sexy- like a sexy librarian! If I were choosing from my own wardrobe, I would go with a knee-length denim pencil skirt, a lacy (but not too revealing) camisole and then either a fitted one-button blazer or a fitted cardigan, with a mid-heeled stiletto shoe.

do you need a license to start a business selling resumes?
Q. I am looking at starting an online resume service to introduce applicants to potential companies. Is there any license required to sell resumes as a service to employers or is this considered head hunting?

A. Businesses are not going to pay you for resumes, they can get hundreds with a single ad in the paper. As an "Employee Representative" you may do better, but you'd be better charging the employee. (A percent of the years first salary, or maybe just a base rate per month while you work for them to find jobs.) As for the license, you don't need to be "licensed" to do this, but you WILL need a business license issued by your state or local taxing authority.
